Nearly 500 jeeps were imported in 2012 and 438 of them were given to police stations.

As their tyres are worn out, jeeps cannot be deployed for investigation and other purposes.

Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara says the police garage in Narahenpita is supplying the tyres as required.

He said a delaying in sending in the requests could have led to this situation.
