The 20th amendment to the constitution will be adopted at a special cabinet meeting on Friday, LSSP leader, Prof. Tissa Vitarana said.

His remark came after president Maithripala Sirisena today held talks with UPFA MPs regarding the constitutional amendment.

The president informed the MPs to submit their views and suggestions for these electoral reforms before Friday.

He also asked that a UPFA committee be formed and a meeting held tomorrow afternoon to discuss the issue.

Also, a meeting of UPFA affiliate party leaders will take place tomorrow, it was decided.

Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday submitted a proposal to the cabinet yesterday to introduce a new electoral system without increasing the number of seats in parliament.

Prof. Vitarana said no agreement was reached on that account at today’s meeting.

However, minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told the media today that increasing the number of MPs from the present 225 would be a burden on the people.

Noting that the UNP has no need to sabotage the 20th amendment, he said what his party wanted was to get it passed in order to hold a general election soon.
