Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa who hopes to contest the next General election under the 'Betel leaf' symbol of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is to contest under the 'chair' symbol of the People's Alliance (PA) if President Maithripala Sirisena does not give him consent to contest under the ticket of the UPFA, sources say.
According to sources close to Rajapaksa, contesting under the PA ticket would not be a problem as Rajapaksa and former Prime minister are the party's chairman and General secretary respectively.
 
No talks
Speaking to the 'Divaina' newspaper, former Prime minister D.M. Jayaratne said that no discussions have been held yet on this regard.
 
He has added that there is nothing to hinder Rajapaksa from securing nominations from the UPFA to contest the General election.
