12.5 bn defrauded in developing 5 roads Featured

In an investigation it has been revealed that out of Rs 25 billion allocated to re-carpet 5 main roads Rs 12.5 billion has been defrauded by a group including the contractors by presenting fake information, said a senior official attached to Ministry of Highways and Investment Promotion.

According to Divaina report the government had allocated an amount of Rs 7 billion to develop the road extending from Kadawatha to Nittambuwa of the Colombo- Kandy road.

Rs 5.5 billion from the particular amount, Rs 1 billion from Rs. 1.5 billion allocated to develop that Kotte- Bope road, Rs 2.25 billion from Rs 10 million reserved to develop the Trincomalle road of the Ambepussa-Kurunegala road, Rs 1.5 billion from Rs 3 billion allocated to construct Mathugama- Awittawa road, Rs 2 billion from Rs 3.5 billion reserved to construct Katharagama-Lunugamwehera road has been defrauded.

As a result the constructions at these roads have been temporarily halted. The government has obtained funds to develop these 5 roads from a state bank.
