Jaffna university lecturer Saminathan Wimal says chauvinistic politics is at work both in the south and the north, where a certain enemy is created and countered.
He is responding to a remark by the province’s chief minister.
Wimal says statements of this nature are made by persons who have social authority, and questions as to why the conspirators are not exposed and remedial action not taken.
Political bankruptcy
Just like in other parts of the country, drugs are spreading in the north after land transportation resumed after the war, before which only sea and air routes were used, he notes.
Also, the youth of the north are freer than before and are getting more money now from their relatives and friends overseas.
The university lecturer points out that the people faced worse kind of problems during the war.
Such remarks show the authority’s inability to solve problems in a post-war scenario and their political bankruptcy, he adds.
