Their objections were expressed at a party leaders’ meeting convened by deputy speaker Chandima Weerakkody to discuss a request by prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to summon parliament on June 03.
Leader of the House Lakshman Kirella said a proposal would be tabled to parliament tomorrow to seek permission for the three civilian members of the CC.
Opposition’s Dinesh Gunawardena claimed the constitutional requirements had been disregarded when making these appointments.
The consent of the prime minister, the opposition leader and the opposition and the government had not been obtained, he said.
The government rejected the claim.
The opposition also objected to the appointment of ministers to the CC, adding that it is practicable to appoint MPs only.
Another meeting of the party leaders will take place at 9.00 am tomorrow.
The debate on appointing members to the CC will take place from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm.
Dr. Radhika Coomaraswamy, Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne and former judge A.W.A. Salam have been nominated as civilian members of the CC.
