Did Customs chief resign over Karunka issue? Featured

The recent resignation of Director General of Customs Jagath P. Wijeweera has taken place over an issue of releasing a 'Karunka' (Arecanut) stock brought into the country for re-exportation, internal sources from the Customs say.

It is said that he was ordered by the ministry of Finance to impose a levy of 5,000 Dollars on a Karunka container, violating the Customs Ordinance.

However, speaking to media, Mr. Wijeweera said that he had resigned due to health reasons.

"I tendered the resignations due to health reasons. It is a personal reason. Reports citing political pressures are false. Who is saying this. At the present I am not well. There is no political reason behind my resignation," he said.
