Turning back to public mandate

Turning back to public mandate Featured

If President Maithripala Sirisena is meeting former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in order to defeat the United National Party, it is an act that turns its back towards the public mandate secured by the President on Jan. 08, political analyst Sunanda Deshapriya says.

Noting that it was an election pledge to continue a national government formed by both the two main political parties for two years, he said that the mandate received on this regard is very clear.

Speaking to 'BBC Sandeshaya' on this regard, Deshapriya has said, "Maithripala Sirisena contested the presidential election to put an end to the suppression and corruption of the Rajapaksa era, to re-establish democracy and to bring about economic prosperity.  One of these pledges was to resolve unresolved issues of the country after the two main political parties formed and continued a national government for two years. That is the mandate. It is a very clear mandate."

Under such a backdrop, the incumbent President should arrive at a certain understanding with the UNP, JVP, JHU and other parties which supported to secure this mandate.

If there is no objective in this meeting to 'send the Prime minister home', the President should break his silence about the relevant statements made by the party spokesman who was appointed by the President himself, Deshapriya has added.
