SLFP calls for polls under fresh electoral reforms

SLFP calls for polls under fresh electoral reforms Featured

Although the United National Party (UNP) claims it is highly likely that the next election would be held under the prevailing electoral system, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) emphasises that the proposed electoral reforms should be initiated as soon as it is passed in parliament.

Speaking to ‘BBC Sandeshaya’, a media spokesperson of the SLFP - Dilan Perera has said, ‘What is the harvest brought in by this electoral system? The harvest brought in by every party are drug dealers and bookies. What do the nomination boards of all parties seek in potential candidates? Educational qualifications? The service rendered to public? No… The Boards ask whether the candidates have enough money to run operate throughout the district. It is the rich who come in. There is no need for the lies of the UNP… Please let us change the electoral system and hold an election’.

22 SLFP ministers resigns

Meanwhile, 22 SLFP ministers who obtained their ministerial portfolios in the new government led by President Maithripala Sirisena, have decided to resign from their ministerial positions after the 20th Amendment is passed in Parliament.

Speaking, a minister of the new government has said they did so just to strengthen the President to pass the 19th and 20th constitutional amendments and would resign once the task is completed.
