The UNP has no objections to the 20th amendment that was submitted for cabinet approval on April 29, he said.
He said, however, adopting the amendment without seeking opinion from the public would be problematic, especially due to new standards to be implemented to decide the electoral divisions.
When contacted, cabinet spokesman Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said the government was yet to take a decision on the system to be followed in holding the next election.
He said parliament would be dissolved only after the passage of the new system.
He said views of certain minority parties that objected to the abolition of the proportional representation system too, would be considered.
Member of the national executive council, NSSP leader Dr. Vikramabahu Karunaratne said the agreement was to hold to next election under the existing system.
That is because it would take a considerable time to appoint electoral organizers under the new system, he said, adding that JVP’s Anura Kumara Dissanayake too, was in agreement to this.
He said such a problem would not arise if the next election is held in another one year’s time.
