President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to opt out of the live TV shows broadcasting the observances of the traditions of the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year.

President's coordinating secretary - Rajika Kodithuwakku has said that the President has decided to opt out of these TV broadcast due to personal reasons.

The recent death of the President's brother is said to be the closest reason.

However, several digital media stations have already decided to broadcast these traditions being observed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
