Appeal hampers Uthaya’s release

Appeal hampers Uthaya’s release Featured

Although the young woman who received a prison sentence for scrawling on the Sigiriya Mirror Wall received a presidential pardon, an appeal filed against her imprisonment has hampered her release, the Justice ministry says.

President Maithripala Sirisena extended a presidential pardon following recommendation by Justice minister Wajayadasa Rajapaksha.

However, as any prisoner who has an appeal case filed against his / her imprisonment is not granted a special pardon of any sort, the pardon will be put to action only after the prisoner withdraws the appeal, secretary to the Justice ministry said.

Uthaya (27) was arrested on February 14 for scrawling on the Mirror Wall using a hairpin. Dambulla Magistrate Court later sentenced her for two years' imprisonment.
