Red labelling will be introduced soon for local and foreign beverages with a high sugar content, says director general of health services Palitha Mahipala.

This is important to control the high prevalence of diabetes among Sri Lankans, he told a media briefing in Colombo.

As per provisions the food act, red, yellow and green labelling will be introduced to indicate different levels of sugar content in the beverages, he said.

This will be made mandatory for imported beverages, he said, adding that this should be expanded to cover packed food as well.
