TNA claims right to opposition leader position Featured

Noting that the UPFA has become a government affiliate after its MPs accepted ministerial and deputy ministerial portfolios, the TNA claims right to the position of opposition leader as it has the next highest number of seats in parliament.

TNA leader R. Sampanthan has told BBC Sandeshaya that they have already raised the matter with the speaker.

When pointed out that the TNA had supported in the formation of a new government following the presidential polls and could be considered a party in the government, he said they have not accepted any ministerial portfolios.

Amirthalingam period

There have been allegations that TULF leader A. Amirthalingam, after being appointed opposition leader after 1977 general election, had used the position to internationalize the Tamils’ issue.

Sampanthan said they do not need to do so if the problems of his people are resolved, through an indigenous solution acceptable to them.
