House dissolution if no backing for 19th amendment

House dissolution if no backing for 19th amendment Featured

The only alternative left is a dissolution of parliament in the event of failure to obtain a two-third majority for the 19th amendment to the constitution, said UNP general secretary Kabir Hashim.

The UNP would do its utmost to get the public-mandated amendment passed in parliament, he said.

The people will decide at the upcoming general election if any other party goes against that mandate, said Hashim.

Champika opposes

This amendment is due to be debated in the House on April 09 and 10, where the SLFP and the JHU are to introduce certain revisions, say political sources.

JHU secretary, minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has said that they would defeat the amendment if attempts were made to get it passed without any revisions.

JVP extends support

Meanwhile, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the president and the prime minister should make maximum interventions to see passage of the 19th amendment.

He said his party has nothing to do with attempts to sabotage this amendment.
