She has reportedly accused the senior leadership of the UNP of attempting to divide the SLFP by deliberately promoting the campaign supporting Mahinda Rajapaksa to be named as the Prime Ministerial Candidate of the SLFP.
According to reports, the former President is of the belief that the UNP is trying to grab power at the next general election by dividing the SLFP vote. Political analysts claim that the SLFP share in the legislature will see a decline if the Rajapaksa factor comes into play at the next general election.
That is why Kumaratunge believes that the UNP wants to promote the Rajapaksas and create a division in the SLFP.
Meanwhile, there have also been allegations leveled against the UNP by the JHU that the government is not acting against Mahinda Rajapaksa allies for their wrongdoings since the UNP wants Rajapaksa to remain strong and pose a challenge to the SLFP.
