A ceremony was held in Jaffna on Monday (23) to hand over 425 acres of land in High Security Zones in the north to the original owners.
Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror' on this regard, senior lecturer at University of Jaffna Wimal Saminathan stated that "the news of resettling its original settlers in the high security zone could be felt by some as a loss of something that belonged to national security.
'The history of these lands is not high security zones. These are villages where the IDPs used to live... The people were removed from those areas due to threats on security forces while the conflict was at its peak... The war has ended now.. And the land should be returned to its original owners,' he said.
"If one sees it as a threat to state security it is useless."
"Actually, as a contribution to national security these people vacated these lands leaving everything behind including their households and livelihoods and that action supported the activities of the security forces."
The society should view the resettlement of IDPs as a gesture of gratitude towards them", he added.
