President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the justice minister to look into the possibility of granting a pardon for Sinnatamby Udaya Sri, a girl from Sittandy who has been sent to two years in prison for having written letters and caused damage to the mirror wall of Sigiriya fortress.
This was revealed by foreign affairs deputy minister Ajith P. Perera in parliament yesterday (19).
He said he has made the request for a pardon as per the powers vested in the president by clause 34 of the constitution, since the girl’s parents have sought intervention from politicians for clemency over the wrong she had done unknowingly.
