Gotabhaya Rajapaksa too, should be given the Field Marshal ranking as he had led the three armed forces during the war, Bodu Bala Sena secretary Ven. Galabodaatte Gnanasara Thera requests the government.

Former Navy and Air Force chiefs Vasantha Karannagoda and Roshan Gunatilake should be decorated similarly, says the Thera.

Former Army commander, Gen. Sarath Fonseka will be promoted to the Field Marshal ranking on March 22 at a ceremony to be chaired by president Maithripala Sirisena, said the presidential secretariat.

A Field Marshal is a lifetime ranking and carries several special privileges.
