Following media reports about her death, police had gone to her grandmother’s home at Mannakkulam and told her the cause of death was a mental ailment, claiming that the death certificate has confirmed it.
Police warned her that if she continued to disobey them, she would be imprisoned for having assassinated the character of her granddaughter.
However, the doctor who treated Saranya at Kilinochchi base hospital has said in front of a police constable that the injuries in her genital area indicated that she had been raped by at least three persons.
The policeman in question was among the team that had gone to the grandmother’s home.
TNA MP S. Sridharan has inquired from Kanakarayankulam police, which has told him that the girl had been gang-raped and that they were awaiting the medical report.
On February 16, the girl had gone to Mannar’s Tirukethiswaran Kovil for a festival, and stayed at a relative’s home without proceeding back to the grandmother’s home.
Later, she had not gone to school for several days, and one night she fainted and relatives took her to Mankulam hospital, suspecting a viral infection.=The grandmother went to Mankulam hospital, but was told Saranya was transferred to Mallavi hospital, from where she was sent to Kilinochchi hospital.
After several ‘mix-ups’ she found the girl’s body in the mortuary, with the doctor saying she had been gang-raped.
Police are yet to make any arrests, says jdslanka.org.
