The deputy minister has told BBC Sandeshaya that it was clear at the talks that the UN was in agreement for an investigation by Lankan judges in accordance with the Sri Lankan law regarding matters pertaining to the war.
Reliable mechanism
The UN official recalled that the UNHRC has put off presenting a report on war crimes allegations in order to give time and space for a reliable local investigation mechanism, said Mr. Perera.
He has requested that the opportunity given be made use of.
Local mechanism
The UN will decide on the basis of the success of the local mechanism as to whether it would continue to call for an international investigation, he said.
The UN hopes a reliable local investigation would take place within the framework of the Sri Lankan judiciary, and that the country would ensure no recurrence of such serious incidents and also that some sort of reconciliation reached regarding incidents that had already taken place, said the deputy minister.
He added that such an investigation should take place locally, not an international probe, if patriotism and communal harmony are to be guaranteed.
