‘Deliver promises on human rights’

Human rights activists have urged the new government to deliver the promises it has made to ensure human rights in the country.

The call came at a media briefing at Maradana yesterday (23).

Speaking here, CaFFE executive director Rajith Keerthi Tennakoon alleged the promises were not yet fulfilled despite nearly 50 days have elapsed since the new government came to power.

It has not taken at least the preliminary steps to investigate disappearances of political activists, including Lalith and Kugan.

Only the Welikada prison incident is under investigation, while the woman Jayakumari is still being detained for political reasons, while her children were taking shelter at the Boossa camp.

Propaganda secretary of the Frontline Society Party Pubudu Jayagoda asked the executive to give the opportunity for Kumar Gunaratnam to engage in politics.

Gunaratnam fled the country due to threats to his life, and now that he is back, the judiciary decided that it was up to the executive, not them, to grant him the political rights, said Jayagoda.

He also demanded an immediate investigation into the raid of the FSP office, as the police spokesman has denied sending police to search the premises.

Dharmasiri Lankapeli, secretary of the Media Employees Trade Unions Alliance, said the government was yet to lay the groundwork for journalists who had left the country due to threats, to return home.

Former minister Mervyn Silva, who had admitted beating up journalist Poddala Jayantha, still goes about freely, he pointed out.
