He is reported to have resignead over a crisis situation created in the aftermath of the resignation of the head of the University Grants Commission Prof. Kshanika Hirumburegama.

Following the resignation of Prof. Kshanika Hirumburegama, Prof Wijesinghe told the media at a Press conference that without his knowledge or consent the minister of Highways, Higher Education and Investment Promotion Kabir Hashim had pressurized Prof Hirumburegama and vice chancellors to quit.

Prof. Wijesinghe is said to have informed Minister Kabir Hashim about his resignation.
