Former transport Minister Kumara Welgama is reported to have spent a whopping Rs.5 million in public money on the erection of a stage to host the final election rally of toppled President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Agalawatte in the Kalutara district, Railway Workers Union convener SP Vithanage said.

He made the statement addressing journalists today (February 12) at Maradana.

Vithanage revealed that Rs.500,000 worth of Mahogany timber along with steel and other material used for the erection of the stage was taken away from the Ratmalana Railway Yard.

He also disclosed that a double cab vehicle bearing registration number WP PC 2430 (TATA SENARO) used by the former deputy minister of Transport Rohana Dissanayake has still not being returned.

Vithanage said that former Transport Minister Welgama had enlisted the services of 700 railway workers for unlawful and irregular activities during the last Presidential election.

In addition Vithanage said that former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa had forcibly acquired a piece of land opposite the Elphinstone Theatre in Maradana which covered an area of 29 acres belonging to the Railway Department for the Urban Development Authority.

Another allegation made by Vithanage was that Gotabaya Rajapaksa threw out 205 railway employees from their quarters at Dematagoda in Colombo 9 and took over three acres of land for a Carlton school.
