The government has decided to shrink the Northern Jaffna-Palali High Security Zone by 1000 acres in order to set up a village for 1022 families displaced by the war.

As per the proposal made by President Maithripala Sirisena as Minister of Defence, as a first step 220 acres will be released from Valalai GA Division of the Welikamam East Divisional Secretariat. Under this programme a pilot village for resettlement of 1022 families displaced by the war will be set up with all common amenities.

Each family will get a 20 perch of land with financial assistance to construct their own house. A school, a pre-school, a hospital, religious places of worship will also be constructed to facilitate the villages to be resettled there. In addition to that infrastructure development including road, power and community centres will also be established.

The Cabinet also decided to make use of the remaining 780 acres of land for the same purpose in the future.
