Gunewardena was released after the court took up the case where he had allegedly been involved in a fraud amounting to Rs.36 million during his tenure as the chairman of the National Lotteries Board.

He was released on Rs.150,000 cash bail with a surety of Rs. 60 million.

It is singular that he is facing 107 charges.
