Opposition Chief Whip John Seneviratne today (February 5) said that signatures of Parliamentarians have been obtained for the impeachment of Minister John Amaratunga.

The impeachment was tabled in Parliament recently over the minister's alleged connection with the attack on the chairman of the Wattala Provincial Council.

Seneviratne said the signed list will be handed over to the Speaker.

He added that as many as 130 MPs had shown a desire to support the impeachment motion.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Member of Parliament Mahinda Amaraweera told 'Sri Lanka Mirror' that the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) was hoping to display its might in Parliament by calling for the impeachment of Minister John Amaratunga.

Noting that the impeachment was in no way aimed at inconveniencing President Maithripala Sirisena, Amaraweera added that it would only help strengthen the President.
