An exchange of ideas on this regard has reportedly taken place during discussions with legal experts who are drafting a new constitution.
According to the new draft constitution, a President is not elected to power by the public but named by Parliament, reports add.

Meanwhile, speaking yesterday (31), President Maithripala Sirisena yet again pledged to replace executive presidency with a system that empowers parliament and the cabinet instead.
"The public has continued to protest against executive presidency which commenced since the 1978 constitution. Many a time, it was pledged to abolish executive presidency. Such pledges stated in the Mahinda
Chinthana manifesto in 2005 and 2010 were also not fulfilled. However, I came to power to remove these unlimited powers from the portfolio of the President and this was clearly stated in the very first article of our manifesto," he said.
