A distilleries company owned by former Trade Minister Johnston Fernando is said to have evaded paying taxes for the past seven months running into more than Rs.80 million.

According to the Excise Department which is responsible for collecting taxes, a liquor producing company can be shut down and sealed for evading tax payments and the Wayamba Distilleries Company had dodged the law for seven months.

Officials of the Excise Department are now facing a probe for suspicious activity.

Attempts by srilankamirror to reach out to the Commissioner General of the Excise Department Wasantha Hapuarachchi or the Kurunegala district authority LJ Ranaweera proved futile.
