After President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday granted a presidential pardon to Sarath Fonseka, restoring his titles and privileges, MP Ketagoda has agreed to resign if Fonseka faced no legal barriers over re-entering parliament.
Although Fonseka was elected to parliament from the Colombo district after contesting the last General Election under the Democratic National Front (DNA), he lost his MP portfolio after the Rajapaksa government stripped him of his civic rights.
Accordingly Jayantha Ketagoda, who obtained the next most number of preferential votes from the DNA after Fonseka, was appointed to parliament instead.
At the present, Fonseka is a member of the Anti Corruption Front of the National Executive Council.
