Some 31 relatives and friends of the toppled Mahinda Rajapaksa government who have been serving at embassies in foreign countries have been told to return to the country.

But a ruling is yet to be made on the numerous armed forces personnel serving in overseas missions.

Among them are officers having to answer for alleged war crimes.

A Foreign Ministry official told srilankamirror that the government has yet to formulate a policy concerning members of the armed forces serving at overseas missions.

Presently armed forces personnel serving at overseas missions enjoy special privileges that makes them immune when it comes to their rights.

Most of the diplomats serving in Sri Lanka's foreign missions overseas are said to be close aides of former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Following is the list of high ranking service personnel serving at diplomatic missions overseas.

Former Navy commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda- Ambassador  in Japan

Former Air Force commander Air Marshall Jayalath Weerakkody- High Commissioner in Pakistan

Former Air Force commander Air Vice Marshall Donald Perera- Ambassador in Israel

Former Army commander General Shantha Kottegoda- Ambassador in Thailand

Former Navy commander Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe- High Commissioner in Australia

Major General Kamal Gunaratne- Deputy High Commissioner in South Africa

Major General Lalith Davulugala- Deputy High Commissioner in Malaysia

Major General Krishantha Silva- Deputy Ambassador in Russia

Major General Nandana Udawatte- Ambassador in Russia

Lt. Commander JK Bandara- second secretary in Japan

Brigadier Deshappriya Dissanayake- second secretary in Turkey

Meanwhile Major Gen Shavendra Silva who is facing war crimes charges was ordered to return to Sri Lanka from his diplomatic posting in the United Nations ahead of the Presidential election.

He is said to have been asked to return after former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa recommended him for a stint at the Israeli National Defence Academy.
