Won't remove military camps in North - land minister

Won't remove military camps in North - land minister Featured

There is no plan to instantly handover civilians' lands obtained by the previous government to establish military camps in the North, newly sworn in minister of lands, M.K.D.S. Gunawardena says.

Speaking to 'BBC Sandeshaya', the minister has said, "At that time, it was compelled to take such measures and that was why peace could be prevailed. However, we will not remove security forces. We will provide the public with alternate lands and fulfil the needs of the farmers."

The present minister was one of those who accused the previous government that lands of villagers were forcefully taken from them by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, following the end of the war.

When the 'BBC Sandeshaya' inquired what measures would be taken to serve justice to these villages, the minister said that the above allegation was indeed true.

A solution would be reached through discussions if any amendments are required with the rising population rates, after considering these lands and the gazette notifications issued in the recent past, the minister has added.
