Parliament sittings are to commence on Jan. 20 and former leader of the House and SLFP senior Nimal Siripala de Silva is to be appointed as the opposition leader, sources from the party headquarters say.

It is also said that plans for the former President to enter parliament as a national list MP have been scrapped.

Attempts to challenge the power of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe after securing the majority power of parliament have also been thwarted with the majority of MPs pledging support to President Maithripala Sirisena.
