Govt. to probe on alleged coup plot

Govt. to probe on alleged coup plot Featured

The government is to initiate a special probe to ascertain whether the former President and former defence secretary had attempted to remain in office through a military coup and conspiracy instead of accepting the public mandate, UNP media unit chief - MP Mangala Samaraweera says.

Speaking at a media briefing yesterday (11), MP Samaraweera said that upon realising that they would be defeated at the election, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and former defence secretary - Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had summoned the Attorney General, the IGP and the Army commander to Temple Trees at 1.00am on Jan. 09th in a bid to retain power through a coup.

Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror' on this regard, the former defence secretary said that the above allegations are baseless.

Noting that the former President had no intention of going against the public mandate, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa added that he was genuinely involved in the discussion with former opposition leader - Ranil Wickremesinghe to pave way for a peaceful transition of power.
