Ballot boxes sent flying onto the road

Two cases of ballot boxes being caught up in road mishaps have taken place just hours before voting in the Presidential election opens on Thursday (January 8).

The first reported case took place when a jeep transporting ballot boxes from Gamini Vidyalaya in Nuwera Eliya to Minuwandeniya in Ginigathhena met with an accident.

A senior polling officer and two others along with a police constable were injured in the mishap.

The second took place when a vehicle transporting ballot boxers collided head-on with a lorry on the Hatton-Colombo road at Watawela.

The crash scattered ballot boxes onto the road.

With the intervention of the assistant elections commissioner in Nuwera Eliya alternate arrangements were made to transport the ballot boxes in other vehicles.

The condition of an election official who travelled in the ill-fated vehicle is said to be critical.
