Elections chief warns biased media

The Elections Commissioner has made a formal warning to several state media institutions warning to remove them from activities of the Presidential election official results coverage if they do not stop broadcasting politically biased programmes.

Director of Campaign for Free & Fair Election (CaFFE) - Rajith Keerthi Tennakoon says that the Elections Commissioner has thus warned the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC), Independent Television Network (ITN) and the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).

Speaking to 'BBC Sandeshaya', Tennakoon has said, 'The SLRC, ITN and the SLBC all faced several counts of illegal campaigning activities, long after the lawful campaigning period had ended, violating election regulations.'

'The Elections Commissioner has made a formal warning over this, warning to remove these institutions from the official results coverage, if they do not put a stop to these biased activities,' he added.
