Retired sergeant major of the Army intelligence Jayamanne, who had left behind a suicide note claiming he had killed journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge, had been 100 km away from the murder scene on the day of the murder, said deputy minister Ajith P. Perera.

Perera was speaking at UNP membership promotion in Bandaragama.

He said Wickremtunge had been murdered for having revealed the massive frauds committed by the Rajapaksa regime by using the war as a front.

Many false claims have been made, and are being made, about his killing.

The police have been able to complete the investigation into the murder, but all of a sudden a retired intelligence member has committed suicide after leaving a note that he had committed the murder.

Investigations have now revealed that on the day Wickrematunge was murdered at Ratmalana, Jayamanne had been in his hometown which was around 100 km away.
