Cigarette price to be raised to Rs. 55 Featured

Minister Rajitha Senaratne says the price of a cigarette will be raised to Rs. 55 once the 15 per cent VAT is imposed on cigarettes.

The cabinet has already raised the price to Rs. 42, and that has resulted in a four to five pc decrease in sales.

The minister says however, the sales of cigars and beedi have not risen due to the increased cigarette price.

Therefore, the prices of cigars and beedi too, would be increased, he says.

Senaratne says he will propose to the government to remove the VAT on health services, due to this increase in tobacco prices.
