New tamarind tree for Kebilitta Featured

Devotees visiting the Kebilitta sacred area in Yala national park, devoted to God Kataragama, will have to obey new rules, says minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera.

The revered tamarind tree there is dying due to its being bathed with chemical-added milk.

Tests have found that the roots of the tree are dying.

After the media highlighted the issue, minister Perera visited the sacred area and took steps to plant a new tamarind tree.

The minister also said an Army unit would be stationed and wildlife officers do their patrolling there in the future.

Devotees will be allowed in the sacred area between 5.30 am and 6.30 pm only.

Meanwhile, senior botanist Bhatiya Sumitrarachchi says the revered tree has lost its life due to human activities.
