"Nothing to do with FCID" say Weliamuna & Sumanthiran

"I am in the opposition and I have nothing to do with government departments or the FCID as claimed by former Minister Tissa Vitharana", said TNA parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran speaking to 'SriLankaMirror'.

He was responding to a question posed to him by SriLankaMirror on the public statement made by Samasamaja leader Tissa Vitharana yesterday (17 Oct) at a media conference on politicising of investigations against members of the previous Rajapaksa rule. MP Sumanthiran said, "I don't know from where he gathered those information. We in the TNA have no positions in any such committee and we are not aware of such committees." MP Sumanthiran thus cleared the name of veteran politician and leader of the TNA, R. Sampanthan, whose name was also mentioned by Tissa Vitharana. He further said he would issue a public denial tomorrow.

Speaking to SriLankaMirror, senior attorney at law J.C. Weliamuna also denied any connection with the FCID. He said the FCID is an investigating division in the police department under IGP. Referring to Tissa Vitharana's claim that a committee headed by PM Wickramasinghe decides on investigations for the FCID, Weliamuna said, "He is thoroughly misinformed. He should get his facts right."

While Tissa Vitharana read out a list of names that included among others Minister Sarath Fonseka and JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake as members of the committee overseeing the FCID, former minister and Communist Party leader DEW Gunasekera said, "FCID officials troop to Temple Trees" in justifying their claims on political intereference in investigations. Their claim of politicised and bias investigations came in the backdrop of President Sirisena publicly accusing these investigating arms of the State including the Bribery Commission as working to a hidden political agenda.

This led to the first high profile resignation of a public official from office with Director General Dilrukshi D. Wickramasinghe resigning yesterday.
