Plans to cut down work hours of policemen

Plans to cut down work hours of policemen Featured

Although a 83,000 - strong police force is required, the count stands near 76,000, the National Police Commission says.

Therefore, police officers are required to complete a considerable number of hours a day, says secretary of the National Police Commission - Ariyadasa Cooray.

The service requirements are hard to meet as the prevailing training facilities limit only a thousand police officers to be trained each year.

Noting that proposals have been tabled to double the number of recruits trained each year, he adds that if this succeeded the number of working hours of a policeman would come down.

He further said that over 15,000 policemen have left the service and plans have been made to recruit them through appeals.

5-year plan
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Police has come up with a 5-year plan to meet with the requirements of the public.

Under this program, mobile police units will be set up in several GN areas of every police division from Oct. 30 - Nov. 30, IGP Pujith Jayasundara says.
