JVP questions President’s statement

JVP questions President’s statement

The JVP says President Maithripala Sirisena’s statement pertaining to investigative bodies should be made clear.

The Head of State speaking at the Foundation Institute yesterday warned he will be compelled to take action against investigative bodies such as the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division, the Criminal Investigations Department and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption if found to be working according to a political agenda.

The JVP issuing a statement today called to refrain from issuing statements that weaken legal action and moves against criminal or fraudulent activities.

The JVP is of the view that such statements arouse suspicion, questioning whether investigative bodies work according to certain political agendas.

The statement further adds the President’s warning issued yesterday goes against the present government’s initiative to stand against corruption and fraud.

As the leader of the country and the head of the government the JVP said it is the President’s duty to clarify all statements, adding the President’s statement cannot be considered lightly.

The party also questioned if the FCID, CID and the Bribery or Corruption Commission act according to a particular political agenda.

The JVP also responded to President Sirisena’s statement pertaining to independent commissions.

The party said it is unacceptable to belittle independent commissions claiming its officers are unaware of state governance.

The JVP added investigations into large scale fraud and corruption is undermined due to such statements adding it will serve as entertainment to those accused of wrongdoing.

The statement further states that investigations and legal action into corruption should under no means be questioned or ridiculed.

The party also calls for the government to fulfil its responsibility to fast track investigations and to respect the people’s mandate.
