Most media still do ‘war reporting’ – Ranga Kalansuriya

Most media still do ‘war reporting’ – Ranga Kalansuriya Featured

The Government Information Department alleges most media violate ethics and are reporting in the same manner they had reported the war.

“That culture should end. It is wrong to continue with that culture. Our responsibility is to rectify those wrongs,” director general of the Department Dr. Ranga Kalansuriya has told BBC Sandeshaya.

He also said suggestions from the public would begin to be accepted this week on the formation of an independent commission to regulate the electronic media.

The Department will present its own suggestions for public perusal, said Kalansuriya.

Previously, the Department issued a statement accusing certain private television institutions of having blatantly violated media ethics when they telecast footage of a youth committing suicide.

Its DG went onto say that an independent commission was needed to regulate and prevent the media from crossing their limit.

He went onto say that despite the Department’s responsibility not being to remind the media about ethics, time has come to make such reminders when considering professionalism in journalism.

He blamed state media too, not just the private media, of being responsible for violation of ethics.
