He was speaking at a function to mark the 67th national day of China and 35 years of the China-Sri Lanka Friendship Association.
China and Sri Lanka have been friends for thousands of years now, he said, especially noting the Sri Lankan tour of Bhikku Fahian.
While reviewing those ties, it is important to further strengthen them for Sri Lanka’s economic development, said the president.
He also recalled with appreciation the assistance extended by China during times of need.
The Sri Lankan government and citizens can never forget the contribution and strength given by China to restore peace and to militarily defeat LTTE terrorists, he said.
China has also sponsored and aided our country’s development and appeared on Sri Lanka’s behalf internationally, including at the UN, he added.
