A group of social activists say president Maithripala Sirisena has responded positively to their requests for action against the corrupt, BBC Sandeshaya reports.

They have presented five proposals, including the speeding up of investigations into corruption and fraud charges against the Rajapaksa regime and action against corruption-accused ministers of the present administration.

They had a meeting with the president on the night of September 13, said convener of the National Movement for a Just Society Prof. Sarath Wijesuriya.

Also among the proposals were to strongly deal with state officials who threaten the government, including ministry secretaries opposing the adoption of the audit act.

Closer cooperation with the prime minister for an administration mechanism to ensure good governance has also been proposed.

The president promised to implement the proposals in consultation with the PM, said Prof. Wijesuriya.

He said court hearings into corruption cases could be expedited under the existing judicial system.
