JVP opposes sale of east container terminal

JVP opposes sale of east container terminal Featured

Alleging the government of attempting to sell the east container terminal of the Colombo south port to the private sector, a JVP trade union asks the President, Prime Minister and other responsible authorities to change the decision.

Secretary of the All Ceylon General Ports Employee Union - Chandrasiri Mahagamage said this is the terminal capable of handling larger container carriers carrying more than 10,000 containers.

The Jaya container terminal is without the capacity to handle such ships, he notes.

One of the two container terminals at the Colombo south port was sold to a Chinese company by the previous regime, while the present administration is attempting to sell the other now, Mahagamage charges.

Construction of the east container terminal has now been completed and only the machinery remains to be installed by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Port workers, TUs and all citizens have a responsibility to protect the profit-earning SLPA which makes a considerable annual contribution to the treasury, he adds.
