Sri Lanka’s maternal mortality, lowest in Asia Featured

In 2015, the year Sri Lanka was named among the lowest in maternal mortality in Asia, the number of deaths at childbirth stood at 113, said the Health Ministry.

In that year, 334,821 births were reported.

The mortality rate stood at 33.7 per 100,000 births.

Most of these deaths have been reported from difficult areas, mainly due to pneumonia and anaemia.

Of them, most of the deaths were in rural and estate areas of women aged below 35 years, said the ministry.
