Non-resident ambassadors to 22 countries

Cabinet approval has been given to a proposal by foreign affairs minister Mangala Samaraweera to appoint non-resident ambassadors to 22 countries.

The countries include New Zealand, Fiji, Czech Republic, Hungary, Chile, Peru, Morocco, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Mauritius, Botswana, Cambodia, Senegal, Ghana, Tanzania, Ireland and the Vatican.

This Singapore-style move is aimed at reducing state expenditure, as the appointees will function from Sri Lanka, and will make only a few visits to the respective countries.

Their main responsibility will be to issue visas.
