Inquirer into sudden deaths R.D. Dharmasena have given an open verdict into the death of former Supreme Court judge Sarath de Abrew.

A final verdict will be given once the government analyst report is received into the death of the 63-year-old.

Judicial medical reports say there were injuries in his face, forehead, legs and the arms.

He had reportedly fallen from an upper floor of his three-storey house at Attidiya in Ratmalana around 10.30 am on August 15.

Giving evidence before the inquirer into sudden deaths, Abrew’s widow called for a proper inquiry as she was suspicious about the death.

However, two relatives of the ex-judge said they believed he had slipped and fallen.

The postmortem examination is due to take place on August 22 at the Mt. Lavinia magistrate’s court.

Daughter hospitalized following assault

Meanwhile, Abrew’s daughter, a 27-year-old mentally-ill girl, was hospitalized yesterday after being assaulted by her teacher.

She was reportedly attacked around 5.00 am in the morning by the young teacher from Mt. Lavinia, who had been staying at the Attidiya home.

The girl has given a statement to police that the teacher had assaulted her.

Dispute with daughter

On the day of his death, Abrew had been involved in a dispute with his daughter and had been in a very bad temper, investigators say.

His wife too, had been having a mental condition, and he had taken her for treatment on August 15.

On the previous night, the ex-judge had been consuming liquor and was heard muttering the name of a certain woman.

At the time he fell, his wife, daughter, teacher and a domestic servant had been in the ground floor.

The teacher has seen him falling down, and she has given a statement to police.
