AG says cannot submit report to COPE by 12th Featured

The auditor general says he cannot grant a request by COPE to submit an audit report on August 12 into purchases of coal to the CEB in the past.

The AG has informed COPE that Lanka Coal Company was yet to hand him over documents pertaining to the purchases since 2009.

The company has told him following his written request several weeks ago that those documents had been given to the FCID for an investigation.

The AG has said that if he was given the documents, he would be able to submit an audit report to the COPE within a fortnight.

Tender to the same company

Meanwhile, a paper has been submitted to the cabinet to grant approval for a controversial company to supply 1.1 million mt of coal without calling for tenders.

This is despite a Supreme Court decision that it was better to call for fresh bids to buy coal.

It is alleged that the fraud relating to the coal tender is as serious as the treasury bond issue fraud.
